From alchemy to chemistry: what changed?
A furnace, a balance, and a written procedure can look ordinary. Together, they changed what counted as a chemical claim.
The materials came first
People made pigments, metals, glass, medicines, and fermented foods long before chemistry was a named science. Such work accumulated practical knowledge: which ores yield metal, how heat changes a material, and how mixtures can be separated.
Alchemical traditions in the Mediterranean, the Islamic world, South Asia, China, and Europe also developed apparatus and written methods. Their aims and explanations differed, but careful handling of substances was already central.
What made a claim portable?
From the seventeenth century onward, experimenters increasingly described quantities, apparatus, and procedures so that another person could challenge or repeat a result. Balances made conservation and composition easier to discuss with numbers rather than appearance alone.
Lavoisier’s late-eighteenth-century work is often used as a landmark because it joined measurement, naming, and explanation. It was not a lone beginning: scientific change depended on instruments, trade, craft knowledge, institutions, and many contributors.
A method, not a finished story
Chemistry does not guarantee that a first explanation is correct. It supplies ways to improve explanations: compare measurements, state conditions, share methods, and revise a model when results disagree.
That is why history belongs in an introduction to chemistry. It shows that formulas and tables are working descriptions, built to be checked and extended.
